Why Ballroom? Because it gives us a wonderful excuse rhythmto look amazing! Let’s face it, after Prom the only reason we really have to dress up is maybe a wedding ….and those are infrequent. Between kids, job, and life it becomes harder to find a good reason to look and feel great.

As ballroom dancers though, we get to do it ALL THE smoothTIME! In dancing there is always a party, or show, or competition to dress up for. We get to see men looking handsome in their black latin shirts and pants, or a fitted tuxedo and ladies shining in their ball gowns, or rhythm dresses!

What a wonderful problem it is to need a big closet….to have a reason to have a selection of evening wear, formal wear, and ballroom dresses or suits….to have a reason to get fancy.

The best part about it is the way it makes you feel. When you take the time to wear something that makes you feel great, spend time selecting your hair, make-up, jewelry, or accessories, and then stand back in admiration you get a boost of self-esteem and joy! Ballroom is classy, sophisticated, elegant and sexy and so is the sensation you get when you dress that way!

Why do we love ballroom?  We love it because it feels so good. Ballroom Dancing refreshes your body, your mind, and your soul giving you a healthier, happier, and more peaceful life.

  1. Your body– Dancing is the study on how to move your body correctly. Regular dancing is the maintenance your joints and muscles need to work at its maximum potential.  As the saying goes “You can either rust out, or wear out.” I prefer the later.old-rusty-car
  2. Your mind– Taking a moment to focus on something else reduces stress and provides clarity. Dancing is a mood elevator and just simply makes you happy. The short term effects of dancing on the mind are related to mood and satisfaction, while the long term effects are related to discipline and memory. According the The New England Journal of medicine,  regularly engaging in social dancing lowered the seniors’ risk of dementia by a staggering 76%. alzheimers
  3. Your soul– Ballroom dancing allows us to connect to the deepest parts of ourselves and others. Whether you want to feel youthful, relaxed, energetic, sensual, happy, or even sad, angry, or strong…..moving to music taps into our deepest selves which can only be described as Freedomfreedom

Over the years, a popular question is always asked… “What is your favorite dance?” For me the answer has always been, “It depends on how I FEEL that day.”  You see, dancing has that magical ability to connect you to your emotions. You have the choice to choose a dance based on expressing the emotions you are currently experiencing, or the ability to change the dance and feel something else. Whether you are getting “a breath of fresh air” by doing something physical or connecting to a more relaxed state, dancing gives you the ability to recharge, rejuvenate, and walk away refreshed.dance-quotes-8

Why Ballroom Dance? It’s a Fun way to Lose Weight!!!

Why Ballroom? What better way to Lose Weight and get in shape than one that you don’t even have to work at!!!!! Dancing is a fun and exciting activity that is aerobic and anaerobic. Which means you get your heart rate up and build muscles all at the same time…. and the absolute best part about it is that you are enjoying yourself so much that is never something you HAVE to do…. it’s something you WANT to do! Imagine dropping 2 pants sizes just because you are having FUN!!! That’s my kind of weight loss!

 

According to WEBMD

  •  Dancing is a whole-body workout that’s actually fun.
  • It’s good for your heart, it makes you stronger, and it will help with balance and coordination.
  • Dancing can be a high-or low-impact workout
  • Dancing improves your heart health, joint mobility, strength, balance/coordination, and an overall sense of well-being, making dance good for most everyone.
  • A 30-minute dance class burns between 130 and 250 calories, about the same as jogging.

 

scaleThat means if I completely enjoy myself with an hour dance lesson, I could eat 500 calories without any guilt, or eat great and be lighter on the scale in the morning!!! Fabulous!

 

Time magazine says “People who took dance class improved their fitness three times more than non-dancers.” The dance group in the study done by the American Heart Association had not only more mobility but faster improvement than the non-dance group.

As a dancer myself, I believe that these results are attributed to the fact that dancing is so good for your body and so absolutely enjoyable. I honestly can not remember what I did for fun before I learned to dance. Nothing even comes close to the wonderful memories I have from dancing and how great it makes you look and feel inside and out!

Why Ballroom Dance?… One of the best reasons to ballroom dance is because of the wonderful hobby it provides. Let me explain… A good hobby is defined as a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure time but a GREAT hobby provides so much more than that.

 

*Hobbies have been shown to make you happy.

When people do things that make them feel good, like a hobby, it activates an area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens that controls how we feel about life, said Dr. Ausim Azizi, chairman of the department of neurology at Temple University’s School of Medicine in Philadelphia, . Activities you enjoy also stimulate the brain’s septal zone and that makes you feel happy, said Azizi.

*Hobbies help you create and think clearly

Hobbies can enhance your creativity, help you think more clearly and sharpen your focus, said Carol Kauffman, an assistant clinical professor at Harvard Medical School. “When you’re really engaged in a hobby you love, you lose your sense of time and enter what’s called a flow state, and that restores your mind and energy,” she said.

*Hobbies give you self-esteem and confidence

Dr. Gabriela Corá, a psychiatrist who is managing partner of the Florida Neuroscience Center and president of Executive Health and Wealth Institute, an executive coaching firm in Miami said, “Making time for enjoyable activities stimulates parts of the brain associated with creative and positive thinking. You become emotionally and intellectually more motivated.” 

Ballroom dancing provides people of all ages and skill levels just that. When there is “nothing to do” you can always go dancing. Whether you move the coffee table in the living room or go find any place that music is playing, ballroom dancing is something you can enjoy anywhere or anytime. When the “ever popular” dinner and a movie gets old or.. adds to many pounds to your waist, ballroom gives people a better way to connect and losing pounds while having fun is not a bad side effect either. When you need a break to clear your mind, a great hobby like Ballroom Dancing can give you the perfect refresher to re-energize and re-motivate yourself.
