There’s No Such Thing as Two Left Feet!- Everyone can learn to Ballroom Dance! There's No Such thing as two left feet

Ah, the old cliche’ of I can’t dance because I have two left feet….such a hugely popular statement but what I find profoundly saddening about it is that there are people who truly believe it. They think they are clumsy, or ungraceful, or unteachable…but it is COMPLETELY UNTRUE! Dancing is a learned skill. It is a skill that Gives you Grace, Poise, Balance, Mobility, and so on and so on!! And ANYONE can learn it!! Dancing is about so much more than how you feel before you ever try. It’s about an experience that most people can’t even put into words. As you look back from where you started to the dancer you have become there is a proud delightful joy, and moments you would never trade.

National Dance Clubs Class

Ballroom dancing starts with simple movement or walking steps… Forward, backward, left, & right… Moves people do everyday. Then you build on those simple steps, improving just walking, and becoming a dancer. For those in wheelchairs, moving forward, backward, and turning left and right is all you will need to know to start dancing.

Then a partner becomes part of your steps or movement and soon you are communicating without words. Some call this the “Miracle of Dance“. Connecting with another person and sharing the moment of a song is sometimes more kindness than some people experience all day.  In this plugged in world of smartphones, movies, and social media we often forget to turn them off, connect, and engage face to face.

Music is added and you start to experience the freedom of expressing what the music has always felt. People naturally walk in a rhythm, which is why musical beat workouts even exist. The funny part is that we actually have to stop thinking so hard to feel what we need to do. Dancing a a meditative and relaxing form of fun and stress relief that ANYONE can do!National Dance Clubs Band

Dancing builds strength and endurance over time and is a low-impact workout. Used as physical therapy for many, we have seen it improve posture, balance, weight, and so much more. People that could only dance for 5 to 10 minutes at a time go on to being able to dance for an hour! Dancing aids if not cures depression and has been used for many centuries to improve the mental and physical well- being of a person.

So remember, if you can move you can dance! Stop by anytime to trade in that extra “left foot” for a right…we would love the privilege of helping you Experience Ballroom!

Thank you for checking in to read about why There’s No Such Thing as Two Left Feet. Check out National Dance Clubs for more information on how you can learn to Ballroom Dance or share it with your friends. If you, yourself, were amazed by your own ability to become a dancer please share your story with us! We would love to hear it!

Maximize Your Results – After The Competition

Congratulations! You just experienced a Ballroom Dance Competition! Whether it was your 1st or your 50th, you improved your skills, confidence, and solidified your progress just by getting out there. Well done! Even though the competition is over, there are still some things you can do to make the MOST out of your Experience! Maximize those results!!

The first thing to remember is to openly listen to your teacher’s opinion about your performance. They will be able to tell you about your clear honest accomplishments, as well as areas to work on. They care just as much about how well you did. After all, it is their reputation on the line with you.  You may not even realize where you made the most improvement through all of the fun and excitement, so lean on your professional. If you performed a Solo you will have the added benefit of reading the judges critiques and advice which is a wonderful tool.

Remember, it is ok to want to do better as long as you can use it to fuel your focus work harder and continue to improve. Use these tools below as positive motivation and Maximize your results!!13323237_1084643408248054_5551284990017077133_o

  • Take a long moment and relish in your accomplishments. Look back on from whence you came…Do you remember when you first started? What it was like? Look at you now!!!

  • Read your Solo comments from the judges. What an amazing resource and tool it is to have multiple advice from top experts.
  • Watch your Video – Hopefully you remembered to record the first few heats and the last few of each category. It is a excellent way to see your progress throughout the day. You will be amazed at the little improvements and the big ones.
  • Create good habits. – You solidified or improved muscle memory in what you had been working on. Work towards creating many good habits in your dancing. The more good habits you develop, (such as footwork, arm styling, latin motion, etc.) the more you will be able to build and focus on in your dancing.
  • A Competition gives you a new perspective-  You may have experienced new dances, new styles, or seen a dancer that you admire. Capitalize on all that you soaked in by incorporating it into your dancing.
  • Your mind is fresh and open to new ideas. Like a sponge you are ready to soak up more knowledge!2063-Albert-Einstein-Quote-The-mind-that-opens-to-a-new-idea-never

Once you are a better dancer that skill never goes away. You own it for for life! You will always be that good. You may get rusty if you stop moving at all, but that dust can be blown off. Since dancing is muscle memory, your moves will all still be there!

I once overheard a conversation at a local competition between a spectator and a seasoned competitor. I am sharing it with you because it gives some clear perspective on competing and it’s benefits. Walking through a ballroom competition one day, I overheard a spectator exclaim, “Wow, she’s a good dancer! I can see why she competes.” Without much pause someone nearby replied. “Oh no, you have it backwards. She’s that good because she competes.” The reply came from an experienced dancer who herself was quite good. We exchanged a smile as she went to line up for her next heat on the floor.

Just getting on the floor is a huge accomplishment that builds confidence and self esteem!! The more you do it the better you will be. Congratulations!

Southern Heat 2016 Review

This years 7th Annual Southern Heat Ballroom Championships hosted by National Dance Clubs was an amazing event full of dance, entertainment, and tons of enjoyment. The Murfreesboro Post said, ” it made it feel like “Dancing with the Stars” was right here in the heart of the ‘Boro this weekend.”

Evolution of Dance was the inspirational theme during this year’s regional competition. Throughout the event, the Southern Heat participants were able to view the various time periods of dance and how dance has transformed over time. From Minuet in the classical time period to the cultural African dancing all the way to today’s hip hop, each dance was expressed using the emotion, grace, and poise of it’s own time period. Competitors traveled in from various parts of Tennessee and Florida ready to Bring the Heat and dance all weekend! Southern Heat was full of high energy, competition, and loud endless cheering. The event ended with a grand performance by Nazar Norov & Irina Kudryashova, United States National American Rhythm Vice Champions and American Rhythm Silver Medalists! We would like to thank all our competitors for joining us in making this year’s Southern Heat such a wonderful event!
